QuickCap: Game 49: CC Throws a Gem in Return to Cleveland

Yankees 10
Indians 3

Sabathia throws another gem and the Yanks build their first place lead over the Red Sox. Quite an impressive run by the Yanks the last few weeks. They've won 14 of their last 17 games. CC has won his last 4 starts dating back to May 8 in Balitmore. He's been a completly different pitcher since A-Rod's return. He goes 7 in his first start in Cleveland since last season's trade. You have to like watching this team play right now.

Finally in First!

The Yankees are in first place! All by themselves. The last time that happened was October 1, 2006...971 days ago. No matter how long ago it was, they are on top right now and as a fan, I have to say it feels pretty good.

As I mentioned last week in one of my posts, things are clicking on all cylinders. They have 13 of their last 16 and are 14-5 since A-Rod's on May 8th. Jorge Posada was activated off the DL last night and returned to the starting lineup. It was the first time since June 22 of last year that A-Rod, Posada and Hideki Matsui were all in the same lineup. Things look to only be getting better for the Yanks.

It's still May so there really isn't any significance in being in first place now but it still feels good. After a dreadful April and all the injuries that have hit the Bombers so far this season the Yanks will take their cut at the top. The baseball season is about to get hot as the calendar turns to June and the temps start rising...the Yanks are already there and look to stay there.

I Like What's Going On In The Bronx

The Yankees are having a homestand for the ages. They have 4 walk-off wins and have had some memorible moments. Who says this Yankee Stadium doesn't have any history?

We saw 3 walk-off wins in a row last weekend. When did you ever see that? A-Rod has been hitting HR's left and right. That's all he's hitting right now but we'll take it. Mark Teixeria is hitting anything and everything. Robinson Cano remembers how he hit in 2007 and so far isn't breaking stride. CC Sabathia is finally the real CC. Melky Cabrera has been money in the clutch. I mean things are clicking on all cylinders now.

What makes this homestand so great is that you can see how the Yankees are finally loosening up. Pies in the face by AJ Burnett, crazy haircuts by Nick Swisher, a WWE Title awarded to the MVP of each game by Johnny Damon. This stuff is great. Where has all this been the last few years. The relaxed Bombers are a fun team to watch. It's been a pleasure to watch. I'm glad to see the chemistry is finally coming along.

The presence of Alex Rodriguez was thought to be sort of a distraction but it hasn't. If anything he was the right man at the right time coming to a team who deseperatly needed him. He's contributing and so is everyone around him. How long is this little run of coolness going to be around the Bombers? I'd say all season but it's going to be one long summer so anything can happen. But remember...the Yankees will get healthier, Jorge Posada, Xavier Nady, and Chein Ming Wang are all expected to reclaim thier roles in the next few weeks. What happens then? Who knows, but for the time being, this is the best team to watch, beacuse if you don't, you're gonna miss something amazing.

Yankees Crazy Homestand Recap

What a week it has been for the Bronx Bombers. Here's a recap of the insane week the Yankees have had to this point so far.

Monday:
Twins 6
Yankees 7

Teixeria and A-Rod delivered first inning homers and the Yanks never looked back. They completed a 4 game sweep of Minnesota.

Tuesday:
Orioles 1
Yankees 9

A-Rod homers in his fourth straight game! CC dominates again through seven and gets his third win in as many starts. Yanks roll to their seventh straight!

Wednesday:
Orioles 4
Yankees 11

No stopping the Bombers, as they win their eigth in a row. Nick Swisher, Robinson Cano and Melky Cabrera hit three consecutive homers in the second inning. Phil Hughes struck out a career-high nine over five solid innings.

Thursday:
Orioles 4
Yankees 7

Streak hits nine as Cano hits another homer. The story of the game was the Yankees bullpen as they held down Baltimore in relief of Joba who left the game in the first after being hit by a line drive on his knee. First nine game winning streak since June of 2007.

Friday:
Phillies 7
Yankees 3

The World Champs came in and ended the winning streak via the long ball. The Phils hit four homers in the win. The Yanks did their best with three of their own, by Jeter,A-Rod and Tex but it wasn't enough to pull out number 10.

Saturday:
Philles 4
Yankees 5

A-Rod does it again! He hits another late inning homerun when the Yanks need it the most. Down 4-2 in the ninth and Alex sends a Brad Lidge pitch into the seats in right. This sets up Melky Cabrera's 3rd walk off hit this season. The Yanks are finding ways to win games, a sign of a team clicking on all the right cylinders.

QuickCap Game 36: Yanks Win On A-Rod Walk-off

Twins 4
Yankees 6

Wow!! A-Rod with the walk-off HR to win the game in the 11th. He certainly does have the flare for the dramatic. It took him 1 pitch to get people talking this season as he hit the first pitch he saw this season for a 3-run HR last week in Baltimore, and now it took him just 2 home games to win a game with one swing. I love it!

Melky delivers in the clutch again! Wow, what a game. How bout Gardner's inside the park HR? If he's able to get on base more often he can do some special things. The Yanks are 1 game over .500 and ride a 3 game winning streak. Let's keep the ball rolling today.

Weekend Trip To Baltimore and A-Rod's Return

Sorry for no updates this weekend as I was in Baltimore with my friend Scott. I visited Camden Yards for the first time on Friday night, just in time for the return of Alex Rodriguez and boy, he did not disappoint.

The place went nuts when he was announced for his first at-bat, then seconds later on the first pitch that he sees this season, he hits a 3-run homerun. Scott and I were on our feet cheering once he was announced and never got a chance to sit down as he hit the homerun and we went crazy. It was truly a magical moment in Camden Yards, you couldn't write out any better.

Here are some pics I took from the game on Friday night....btw Kim Jones is Hott!

Alex Rodriguez Is Back Tonight!

Many people won't admit to this but at this point every Yankee fan will be counting their blessings tonight as Alex Rodriguez returns to the lineup. It will mark the first time we see Alex in offical baseball action since his admitted use of PED back in Feburary.

Tonight is the return of A-Rod to the Yanks and that's just what the doctor ordered (sorry, bad choice of words...Manny Ramirez "followed" doctor's ordered and tested positive for steroids but that's another issue in of itself.) The Yanks are hurting in just about every which way. The starting pitching is spotty at best, the bullpen is imploding in front of our eyes (even Mariano!), the offense can't get the clutch hit they need so he's coming back to a mess. If there was ever a time for Alex to get everyone on his side, it's now.

Time to carry the troops on his back and time to prove everyone wrong. With so many injuries and inconsistencies the Yanks just need Alex in the lineup. His presence will make an impact, it should make everyone around him better, especially Mark Teixeira. This is the time Alex to be the Yankees savior...please come back and help this team right the ship, it's time for Alex Rodriguez to live up to expectations and restore his legacy...there is no better time than now..the Yankees need Alex Rodriguez.

This loss has to be the worst of them all. Mo gives up back to back homeruns, there's gotta be something wrong with that shoulder. If there is, the Yanks are in SERIOUS trouble. Losing streak hits 5.

This is getting really fustrating. We are finding new ways to lose. I thought for sure when Tex got the double to tie the game, that we were gonna win this one. The losing skid hits 4.

The Sox got to Hughes early as he was unable to match his previous start in Detriot. At least Tex homered twice. The Yanks have now dropped 4 straight to the Sox this year.

Are The Yankees Hurting Themselves?

As I was browsing the internet this morning I came across an interesting post by Peter Abraham. He questions the Yankees and their handling of injuries. He gave a few examples for his questioning, here's an excerpt:
Just wondering, but does anybody else question what is going on with the Yankees and their ability to properly evaluate injuries?

Damaso Marte went seven days without pitching then they decided to put him on the disabled list. Then we found out today that the injury he had in spring training never really cleared up. Meanwhile, he made seven appearances and got knocked around.

Chien-Ming Wang, as it turns out, had weakness in his injured foot and that led to atrophied hip muscles. How did this go unnoticed all spring and lead to his getting crushed for three starts?

A-Rod said his hip injury was an issue last June. Yet he played the rest of the year and it went undiagnosed until March. Then he needed surgery that has so far kept him out a month......

Look at Mark Teixeira, for instance. He has not been the same since he injured his wrist. What would be better for the Yankees, Juan Miranda playing first base or Tex going 2 for 27? Should he be on the DL?

It's worth looking at. The Yankees have so much pressure on themselves to win that they may be throwing injured stars onto the field to justify their big payroll and now, new stadium. By doing so, they are hurting their chances of being a competitive team. If Marte has been hurt since the WBC in March, he should've been placed on the DL. Alex's hip has been bothering since last season so why did it go unnoticed for so long? Maybe the Yankees knew and tried to dance around it and wanted to see if it would clear up during the winter. Who knows, but a healthy player is far better than an injured player.

The Yanks have been hit with the injury bug quick this year but continue to stay strong with an above .500 record. They did shut down Xavier Nady once they saw he injured his elbow so maybe they do know what they're doing after all. Brian Bruney's elbow is acting up again and may miss a good chuck of time, much like last year. Injuries are apart of sports and the best teams overcome them. For all the talk about how great the 2009 Yankees are, this is a time where we get a good indication of just how good they are. 1 MVP, 1 potential Cy Young, 1 All-Star, and 1 would be closer down and they are still above water. Let's see what happens when the Yanks are all fully healthy.

CC's Still Shaky But No Cause For Concern

CC Sabathia is 1-3 after six starts, it's hardly what the Yankees were hoping for when they signed the hefty lefty to a record $161 million contract in the offseason. Has he pitched poorly? Not really.

Yesterday CC was solid through the first six innings giving up only one run but fell apart in the 7th. He simply ran out of gas.

"I've got to do a better job trying to keep us in the game," Sabathia said.

In his last start CC went the distance in Detriot and in that start the Yankees couldn't help him out with their hitting. Yesterday the offense could'nt do anything against Angels pitcher Matt Palmer.

"My arm feels good, my body feels good," Sabathia insisted. "That's just baseball. I'm throwing the ball better than at this time last year. It's a long season."

Last year Sabathia struggled in his first few starts and as we all saw he turned things around, I expect much of the same. He's too good to stay at the pace he's going now. He will hit a hot streak this season and he will be the pitcher the Yankees thought they were getting when they signed him. Everyone needs to remember these are new surroundings for CC and there is the weight of the world on his shoulders every time he goes out there so lets be a little patient.

The team will perform better once Alex Rodriguez returns to the lineup and Chein-Ming Wang returns healthy to the rotation. Until then we have to grind things out with what we have and what we have isn't as bad as people make it oout to be. It's only May 3.

Angels 8

CC Sabathia looked alright through most of the game but Johnny Damon not being able to handle that fly ball led to the flood gates opening and the Yanks couldn't bounce back like they did Friday night. They added a few runs in the bottom of the 9th but ultimately came up short. Jorge Posada has been looking really good lately as he's been swinging the bat lately, his production last season was missed throughtout the year. Phil Hughes goes this afternoon and tries to top his stellar start in Detriot.

Kelly Clarkson at Yankee Stadium

After today's loss I thought I would cheer myself up with replay of Kelly Clarkson singing the National Anthem to open up the new Yankee Stadium. She's got an amazing voice.

QuickCap Game 23

Angels 9
Yankees 10

Last weekend the Yankees blew 2 games in Boston they should've won. They almost started this weekend the same way. With a lead of 4-0 in the 6th Andy Pettitte fell apart and the Halos scored 6 runs with 2 outs. The Yanks tried their best to come back themselves and got to trailing 9-8 in the 8th. In the 9th they got a walk from Mark Teixeira and base hits by Hideki Matsui and Robinson Cano to load the bases. Jorge Posada then came up and got the game winning two-run single to send everyone home happy. Good game but there are some serious issues with the bullpen, let's see what the Yanks do to address this.

Again? More A-Rod "Juice"....Give It Up Lady!

So we have ANOTHER story on Alex Rodriguez and steroids. Is it me or is this chick Selena Roberts trying to make every dollar she can off of him? It sure seems like it.

Wheter the book has truth or not, it's a dead issue. No one cares about A-Rod and his steroid use anymore. He admitted to using performance enhancing drugs already so these new revelations in the "A-Rod" book are not as stunning as some people make it to be. In the book she claims he started using PED's in high school (ok, and no one does it now?), claims he has been suspected of using them while with the Yankees (and was he the only player suspected at the time?) and that he was tipped off by players of the pitches coming so his batting average could look nice (that's a little bit of a reach in terms of validility but if it is, I'm sure he's not the only one who does it.)

I believe most of us have moved on from Alex and his past. Wheter it was right or wrong, that is up to you to decide but the baseball season is underway and that's all anyone really cares about. Let's worry about baseball and baseball only. When Alex was asked about his thoughts on Roberts' recent allegations in her book he replied,
"I'm not going there. I'm just so excited about being back on the field and playing baseball. My team has won two games (in a row) up there and hopefully I can come back and help them win some more."

It's interesting to note how this book was orginally scheduled to be released in May, but then it was pushed up to April 13th, right before the home opener of the new Yankee Stadium, now it's pushed back to coincide with A-Rod's return. What a joke! I understand trying to sell a book and make money but this is rediculous. At this point not many people will care what she has to say as long as he keeps putting up numbers and the rest of 103 names on the list she obatined for her Feburary SI article are released.
