The Yankees blew a huge game on Thursday afternoon and I'm not so sure we can blame the offense for this one. I have to place blame on Joe Girardi. I have to second guess a move he made last night that impacted today's loss.
Last night while everyone focused on the 8 runs and 9 straight hits in the 3rd inning off of David Price, I was left scratching my head as Girardi elected to bring in Dellin Betances with the score 8-3 in the 9th. Now, Betances had the previous 3 days off so he was well rested BUT why bring him in when you might need him the following day for multiple innings or in successive days? The Yankees are at a point where every game is crucial, especially Thursday's game with the Detroit Tigers, a team that's in front of them...

Yanks Mc-Can Make Their Way To A Playoff Spot

The Yankees can hit with runners in scoring position. Well, during their current 4 game winning streak they are. Better at bats have resulted in better results. Those results are finishing a homestand 4-2 after dropping the first two to the not so lowly Astros.
In the process the Yankees have gained ground for that second Wild Card spot and currently sit 3 games out with 3 games against the Tigers coming this week. I asked ESPN NY's Ryan Ruocco and Don LaGreca for their thoughts on this run.
I couldn't agree more with both. In Ryan's case, I can relate because I have had this love-hate relationship with this team all season, more so in the last month since Tanaka went down with his elbow injury. In LaGreca's response, he's absolutely...

Here are some pictures from Joe Torre Day today at Yankee Stadium. I'll have my thoughts on Joe on Monday with an article on his time in Pinstripes.
...

Joe Torre will be honored on Saturday by the Yankees. He will receive a plaque for Monument Park and have his no. 6 retired. The picture above was taken moments after the Yanks won their last championship under Torre in 2000 after defeating the Mets in 5 games. Well deserved Mr. Tor...

The Yankees were hitting .136 (8-for-59) with runners in scoring position in their previous nine games, seven of which they lost.
They didn't need to worry about that today as Brandon McCarthy pitched a complete game shutout against the Astros. The Yankees avoid the three game sweep and gain ground on the Tigers for the second wild card spot.
The Yankees have not scored more than 4 runs in the last 10 games. That's still VERY worrisome for me. Until I see a spark of offense from this team, I'm not sold on them making it to the playoffs. Nice 3-0 win today at the Stadium, but can't help to think how much better it would have been had the Yanks done their job and win the first 2 games of the series. For now...it's just a win in a disappointing...

Desperation Leads to More Frustration

Joe Girardi felt it, the Yankee offense felt it. Michael Pineda didn't for 6 innings, but much like this latest stretch, he fell victim of the Yankees desperation.
Girardi ran Pineda out for the 7th inning in a game he HAD to win. He couldn't use his late inning weapons of Dellin Betances and David Robertson. Who by the way, also have faltered in the crucial of times in the last week. Pineda reached his pitch limit through 6 innings but Girardi so desperate for a win, ran him out there for the 7th. I immediately thought back to Betances in Baltimore last week. Betances was lights out through 2 innings of relief but Giradi pushed the envelope and tried to get a 3rd straight flawless inning. He was playing with fire...he got burned. Betances...

The Yankees made it official today, they placed Carlos Beltran on the 15 day DL with a bone spur in his right elbow.
“It’s frustrating, but at the end of the day, there’s nothing I can do about it,” Beltran said. “I just have to find a way to get better and get back.
Right now, they gave me some cortisone pills by mouth to try to make it better, and let’s say if in 15 days it doesn’t get better, we have to talk about making another decision.”
With Beltran out, Ichiro should see an increase in playing time. Hopefully this injury doesn't linger on for the rest of the season and derail Beltran when the Yankees need him down the stretch....

Sabathia's Disasterious Season Takes Another Turn

The Yankees placed "ace" lefty CC Sabathia on the 15 day DL on Sunday. CC's 3-4 record and 5.38 ERA has many concerned as what the future might hold for the once dominant ace. The results from the MRI scheduled will give the Yankees a better idea of what to expect going forward.
Is the knee injury the reason for CC's subpar numbers? I don't think so, as I think there is still an issue with his surgically repaired elbow. We'll know more as the results are made public....

QUITE FRANKLY: Ca-NO Longer Welcomed Here

Robinson Cano made his return to the Bronx last night and much was made about the reaction he was given by the crowd at Yankee Stadium.
I was one of those in attendance to see Robbie's return. So was about 15,000 other people braving the atrocious weather Tuesday night.
I don't see why a big deal was made. Like any other athlete who leaves in their prime to go to another team, Cano was booed. Ok, ok so it was a little more than just a couple boos.
Everyone in the entire ballpark came last night, sat in frigid temperatures and endured annoying rain drops just to come together as one to mercifully jeer Robinson Cano. They (we) had every right to do so.
For one, I booed him because he left my favorite team. He left my team when he...

Michael Pineda will have a lot of time to think about where he should put the pine tar as he gets ejected from the game and will likely face lengthy suspension as a result....

A triple, a double, a nice catch in center, and a Yankees win sums up the night Jacoby Ellsbury had in his return to Boston on Tuesday night.
Ellsbury showed Boston he still has the goods
Not to be outdone Masahiro Tanaka pitched 7 1/3 innings in his Fenway debut allowing two homers in the 3rd inning but regained his composure and struck out 7. He's now 3-0 2.15 ERA on the season. The last time Tanaka saw a defeat? Back in 2012!
Derek Jeter added a couple of RBI singles, while Carlos Beltran added another home run in the Fenway rout.
The Yankees are 4-1 against the Red Sox , a stark contrast to the 6-13 record they had against their rivals all of 2013....

Some news and notes for tonight's game against the Red Sox at Fenway Park:
- David Robertson will be available to pitch as he was activated from the 15-day DL. To make room on the roster the Yankees optioned optioning Matt Daley and Bryan Mitchell down to the minors.
**Interesting to see how Robertson fairs in his new role as closer in Boston. This will be one of the major tests David will see this year in his first year replacing Mariano Rivera as closer.
- Jacoby Ellsbury makes his return to Fenway for the first time since leaving Beantown shortly after winning the World Series last October. I'll be looking forward to seeing how the Fenway faithful react to Jacoby's return.
- Tonight also marks Masahiro Tanaka's debut in Boston....
