Yanks Win AL East! Ready For October

Yesterday the Yankees clinched the A.L. East, Home-field Advantage and best record in baseball with their 4-2 win over the Red Sox at the Stadium.

The Yankees are returning to the postseason for the 14th time in the last 15 years. Last season the Bombers missed out on October baseball for the 1st time since 1994.

Newcomers Mark Teixeria, CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, and Nick Swisher got their 1st taste of what it really means to be a Yankee. They all know their is certainly more work to be done before all is said and done.

After starting the season 0-8 against Boston, the Bombers have won 9 of their last 10 against their divison rivals, a team they very well might be playing again in the ALCS in just a few weeks.

The sweep of the Sox also comes after the Yanks took 2 of 3 from the Angels in Anaheim, a demon they wanted to overcome.

I'd say these Yankees are ready to roll into October and right to a 27th championship. This team is as good as any team that has been here in recent memory, let's hope they can follow through with all the expectations and deliver New York a World Series title.

QuickCap: Game 85

Yankees 8
Angels 14

I'm disgusted. For the second straight day the Yanks blew a 4 run lead. I just don't want to get into specifics because it was that bad. The upside, A-Rod hit 2 more HRs and is continuing his hot streak. He now is in the Top 10 on the All-Time HR list. Another good note was Eric Hinske, he hit 2 HRs yesterday. That's 3 homers in 9 at-bats as a Yankee. That's better then his 1 HR for the Pirates the previous 3 months.

I'm not too sure what exactly happened last night as the Yankees faltered against the Angels after having a 4-0 lead. This is the second straight 4-0 lead that Joba Chamberlain has given up. I still like him as a starter but he's gonna have to perform better than he has in recent outings. A bad game all around for the Bombers who lost for the first time in 9 games on the road. The lost puts the Yanks a game behind the Red Sox in the AL East.

CC's Still Shaky But No Cause For Concern

CC Sabathia is 1-3 after six starts, it's hardly what the Yankees were hoping for when they signed the hefty lefty to a record $161 million contract in the offseason. Has he pitched poorly? Not really.

Yesterday CC was solid through the first six innings giving up only one run but fell apart in the 7th. He simply ran out of gas.

"I've got to do a better job trying to keep us in the game," Sabathia said.

In his last start CC went the distance in Detriot and in that start the Yankees couldn't help him out with their hitting. Yesterday the offense could'nt do anything against Angels pitcher Matt Palmer.

"My arm feels good, my body feels good," Sabathia insisted. "That's just baseball. I'm throwing the ball better than at this time last year. It's a long season."

Last year Sabathia struggled in his first few starts and as we all saw he turned things around, I expect much of the same. He's too good to stay at the pace he's going now. He will hit a hot streak this season and he will be the pitcher the Yankees thought they were getting when they signed him. Everyone needs to remember these are new surroundings for CC and there is the weight of the world on his shoulders every time he goes out there so lets be a little patient.

The team will perform better once Alex Rodriguez returns to the lineup and Chein-Ming Wang returns healthy to the rotation. Until then we have to grind things out with what we have and what we have isn't as bad as people make it oout to be. It's only May 3.

QuickCap Game 24

Angels 8
Yankees 4

CC Sabathia looked alright through most of the game but Johnny Damon not being able to handle that fly ball led to the flood gates opening and the Yanks couldn't bounce back like they did Friday night. They added a few runs in the bottom of the 9th but ultimately came up short. Jorge Posada has been looking really good lately as he's been swinging the bat lately, his production last season was missed throughtout the year. Phil Hughes goes this afternoon and tries to top his stellar start in Detriot.

QuickCap Game 23

Angels 9
Yankees 10

Last weekend the Yankees blew 2 games in Boston they should've won. They almost started this weekend the same way. With a lead of 4-0 in the 6th Andy Pettitte fell apart and the Halos scored 6 runs with 2 outs. The Yanks tried their best to come back themselves and got to trailing 9-8 in the 8th. In the 9th they got a walk from Mark Teixeira and base hits by Hideki Matsui and Robinson Cano to load the bases. Jorge Posada then came up and got the game winning two-run single to send everyone home happy. Good game but there are some serious issues with the bullpen, let's see what the Yanks do to address this.

The Melk Man delivers once again. Good for him. He gets the go-ahead hit in the 8th to put the Yanks up for good. That's three in a row for the Bombers.

Jeter's Bachelor Days May Be Over

The following news may upset a lot of females out there. There's a rumor swirling that Derek Jeter might be getting married to his girlfriend Minka Kelly. This rumor came about from Hideki Matsui.

Last season Matsui, Jeter, and Bobby Abreu made a bet as to who was going to get married first. Matsui got married last year before the season began, thus leaving Abreu and Jeter behind. Jeter said he didn't have a girlfriend so the bet was extended for him an extra year. That year is about to be up.

“We’ve got a bet going,” Matsui replied. “If he doesn’t get married within a year, I win the bet. Basically the bet was, whoever gets married first wins. Jeter said he himself doesn’t have a girlfriend, so he’s getting a one-year handicap” Matsui said last year.

Most people, myself included found this hilarious. Derek had a different take on it:
“That’s not hilarious, that’s sad, that’s real sad,” Jeter said. “If he wanted the money, all he had to do was ask. He didn’t really have to do it.”

Abreu earlier this week signed with the Los Angeles Angels and apparently didn't uphold his end of the bet.
“Bobby left without paying,” Matsui said.

Bobby was expecting a hefty contract this winter and didn't get it. He might have to give Matsui an IOU until the Angels come to the Bronx. Jeter's bachelor days may be numbered.

Yanks Make Offer To Sabthia

The Yankees missed the playoffs this season for the first time since 1993 and they do not want that to happen again....EVER. Yesterday marked the first day of free agency and the Yankees were ready.

The biggest need for the Yankees right now is starting pitching. The biggest free agent out there is CC Sabathia who happens to be a starting pitcher. Well there's a perfect match. It comes as no surprise that the Yankees are going to go after the hefty lefty but how aggressive they really are going to be is the question. On Friday we got out answer. The Yankees made the lefty an offer of 6 years and around $140 million, that's just to start things off. The final number could very well be around $150 million. The Yanks are wasting no time in getting targeting their main man.

The offer was set to discourage other teams from having a shot at signing Sabathia. The Mets, Angels, Dodgers, and Brewers all appear to be in the running but it'll be tough to match or exceed the offer the Yankees gave CC. The Mets gave Johan Santana a 6 year $137 million so it doesn't look likely that the Mets will offer another pitcher a similar deal, even if it would give them one of the best rotations in baseball. The Brewers simply do not have the resources the other teams do financially so they don't appear to be a contender here. The Angels and Dodgers both have to deal with their own free agents who will both likely command big money in the ballpark of $20 million each per season (Mark Teixeira for the Angels and Manny Ramirez for the Dodgers).

The Yanks big spending doesn't stop there. They are going after free agent pitchers AJ Burnett and Derek Lowe. They are going to make them substantial offers as well.

"We’re prepared to make offers to (A.J.) Burnett and (Derek) Lowe. I’m starting to become very optimistic. I think it’s going to be mutually beneficial to us and for these particular players that we’re after for them to join the Yankees” said Hank Steinbrenner.

The Yanks aren't playing games. They want their pitchers and they want them ASAP. I like the aggressiveness here. Get these deals done and get everyone ready for spring training in Feburary. I can't see Sabathia turning down so much money from the Yanks. Whatever happens this winter one thing is for certain, the Yankees will find a way to get an ace and will add starting pitching that will put them with one of the best rotations in the league. CC will get his cake and eat it too. The Yankees will even give him the plate, the fork, and the cake of his choice and watch him eat it. That's how badly the Yankees want to win. That's how much of a panic the Yankees are in after missing the playoffs. They enter 2009 going into the New Yankee Stadium and want a new ace to lead the staff into familiar territory, the World Series. A year after shying away from Santana and the mega deal he wanted, the Yankees are going ALL in for Sabathia, I love it. Show him the money and me a ring! I can't wait.
