Yankees Clinch

Start spreading the news...the Yanks are in. After tonight's 12-4 win win over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, the Yankees have clinched a playoff spot. A feat that seemed improbable back in May when New York was flirting with disaster, being 14.5 games back and in last place. With the clinch of the playoff spot, it marks the 13th year in a row the Yanks have made it.

"We've come from a long ways this year and a lot of adversity, a lot of injuries," Alex Rodriguez said. "This team has a lot to be proud of."

"This ballclub never stopped believing," said Yankees manager Joe Torre, his voice choking with emotion.

"It never gets old," Mariano Rivera said during a champagne celebration in the clubhouse. "Everybody counted us out. We just played hard

The Yankees still remain 3 games behind the Boston Red Sox in the A.L. East but it seems highly unlikely they will catch their rivals this season. As many fans know, going into the postseason as the Wild Card team isn't excatly a bad thing. 4 Wild Card teams have gone on to win the World Series (1997 Florida Marlins,2002 Anaheim Angels, 2003 Florida Marlins,2004 Boston Red Sox). The Yankees opponent in the opening round of the playoffs are still yet to be determined. No matter who the competition, the Bronx Bombers will be ready.
